Asbestos Air Monitoring and Clearance

Independent AHERA-compliant project monitoring during abatement, and same-day PCM clearance reports, for schools, government and commercial properties in DC, Maryland and Virginia.

AHERA compliant OSHA 29 CFR 1926.1101 NESHAP Same-day PCM clearance DC, MD, VA requirements
Why independent monitoring

The abatement contractor removes it. We prove the air is clean.

Owners, schools and agencies need someone other than the contractor to watch the work and test the air before the space reopens. That is all we do: monitor during abatement, run clearance, and put the results in writing the same day.

  • Personal and area sampling during the work, so the crew and the people outside containment are both covered.
  • Same-day phase contrast microscopy (PCM) clearance reports, so the space reopens on schedule.
  • TEM analysis when the regulation or the project calls for it.

How monitoring works

From pre-assessment to final clearance.

1

Pre-assessment

Asbestos-containing materials identified and risks assessed before work starts, usually from an asbestos inspection survey.

2

Air monitoring

Static area samples and personal samples on the crew while abatement is under way.

3

Sample collection

Bulk material and air filter samples collected under chain of custody for the laboratory.

4

Lab analysis

PCM for fiber counts, TEM where required, by certified analysts.

5

Clearance sampling

Post-abatement air testing to confirm the area meets EPA, OSHA and local criteria for re-occupancy.

6

Same-day report

Results, compliance status and final clearance in writing, the day the samples are run.

Regulations we work to

Federal, state and local, on one report.

Every project is documented against the rules that apply to the building and the jurisdiction.

  • EPA AHERA for schools and the clearance criteria many owners adopt.
  • OSHA 29 CFR 1926.1101 for worker exposure during construction.
  • NESHAP for demolition and renovation.
  • Virginia, Maryland and Washington, DC state and local requirements.
